2023: Indian State Assembly Elections

In 2022, India saw elections in seven states: Goa, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Himachal Pradesh. The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) won in five of these states, while the by-polls in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh also saw a battle between the BJP and regional parties. The year also saw the collapse of the governments of Maharashtra and Bihar, with the Congress losing power in Maharashtra and the BJP’s alliance with Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) in Bihar ending. In 2023, nine states, including Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, and Telangana, will hold elections, with the BJP expected to face tough competition from Congress and regional parties. The date for elections in Jammu and Kashmir, which is currently under President’s Rule, has not yet been announced, but is expected to be held in 2023.
