Manipur: Officials reported an increase in the death toll to 54 in the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, though unofficial sources suggest the number of fatalities is higher, with over 150 people injured. Despite the tense situation, shops and markets reopened, and cars resumed plying on the roads in Imphal Valley on May 6. Security forces have increased their presence in the major roads and areas, with roadblocks and cordons set up in areas where militants have engaged in clashes with security forces. As the violence continues, many people, including students, are attempting to flee the troubled state. The riots broke out after tribals organized demonstrations against a move to give the majority Meitei community scheduled tribe status, which led to clashes between different communities. The government has deployed nearly 10,000 army, paramilitary, and central police forces to maintain order in the state, with additional forces dispatched following a review of the situation by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
