8 people died when a flash flood struck the Mal River in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, during an idol immersion.
Indian city of Jalpaiguri (West Bengal), October 6 (ANI): According to District Magistrate Moumita Godara Basu, eight people perished in a flash flood that struck the Mal River in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal on Wednesday evening.The district authority reported that one more body was found, bringing the total to eight.According to Moumita Godara, there are being searched to see if there ar any further casualties.Among those slain in the horrific incident were four ladies.According to the district magistrate, those who suffered minor injuries have been admitted to a neighbouring hospital.The family members of those who perished in the flash flood have been sent condolence messages by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“Anguished by the mishap during Durga Puja festivities in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones,” PM Modi tweeted.
When flash floods flooded the Mal River during the Wednesday Visarjan (immersion) of the Goddess Durga idol in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, Jalpaiguri SP Debarshi Dutta had reported that seven persons had killed and dozens were feared missing.
“Flash flood hits Mal River in Jalpaiguri during Durga Visarjan. Seven people were dead, several were feared missing and many people were trapped in the river and many washed away. Bodies of seven people were recovered. NDRF and civil defence deployed; rescue underway,” Debarshi Dutta said.
