Lionel Messi was the toast of the city, not just in Argentina but nearly the world, after leading the South American giants to their third world title in Qatar on Sunday. They are even considering putting their face on peso bills. The central bank of the Argentine Republic is planning to honor this historic feat and is working on the idea after beating France 4-2 in the final, according to a report in Mexican daily El Financiero. Proposed banknote mockups have already gone viral on social media, with fans eager for them to be distributed.

The 1,000-peso note was also specially chosen because it begins with the number 10, matching Messi’s Argentina jersey number, the report said. One side of the mockup features Messi’s face, while the other side has the team’s nickname, “La Scaloneta.” The name has become associated with Argentina’s men’s national team after Lionel Scaroni took charge after Jorge Sampaoli’s resignation in 2018. Under Scaroni, Argentina will be his 2021 team. They won the Copa America, the first-ever Finalissima at Wembley Stadium, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
