Aya: Earthquake-Surviving Syrian Baby

A baby girl was recently rescued from the rubble of a building in Syria that was destroyed by a massive earthquake. The baby, named Aya, which means “miracle” in Arabic, was the only survivor of her family.
Her mother died in the earthquake and was still connected to Aya by the umbilical cord when she was found by rescue workers. Aya’s father and siblings also lost their lives in the tragedy. The baby’s great-uncle, Salah al-Badran, will take her home once she is released from the hospital.
The earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey on February 6th was one of the deadliest with a magnitude of 7.8 and has claimed over 21,000 lives so far. The World Bank has announced a donation of $1.78 billion to aid in the relief and recovery efforts in the affected area.
