A Bangladeshi smuggler was shot dead by BSF while smuggling buffaloes at the border. The incident took place late on Saturday night at Bishnupur border of India-Bangladesh under Krishnaganj police station of Nadia. However, the identity of the deceased was not known till Sunday evening. According to BSF sources, the age of the deceased is approximately 35 years. Some smugglers from Bangladesh arrived near the border through Bishnupur border late on Saturday night. At that time, some smugglers from India were trying to smuggle buffalo across. As soon as the soldiers of BSF No. 54 Battalion, who were on guard at that time, came to their attention, they challenged the traffickers. Undaunted, the smugglers chased the BSF jawans with sharp weapons. At that time, the jawans were forced to fire a round at zero in self-defense. Even so, the smugglers did not go away, when the jawans fired another round, one of the smugglers was shot dead. After that the rest ran away.
A BSF official said, “15-20 smugglers were trying to smuggle buffaloes from India from the Bangladesh side. Several smugglers were helping them from the other side. When the BSF jawans intercepted the traffickers attacked the BSF jawans. A BSF man fired a round at point blank range at the smugglers. Even then, the smugglers did not run away and tried to attack the jawans. A BSF jawan then fired a round to save his colleague. A trafficker was seriously injured and later died. A buffalo was recovered from the spot.”
