Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Minister of the Interior Nisit Pramanik in 19-Year-Old Extortion CaseA court in Alipurdual has issued an arrest warrant for Federal Home Affairs Minister Nisit Pramanik in 13-year-old extortion case.“On November 11, the Alipurduar Third Court of Justice issued an arrest warrant for Nishith Pramanik, inter alia, under IPC Sections 457 (Indoor Extortion), 383 (Extortion) and 411 (Unauthorized Receipt of Stolen Goods). The incident happened in Alipurduar in 2009,” said prosecutor P. Narayan Majumdar.

The case was transferred from the Special MP/MLA Court in Barasat, North 24 Parganas District, to the Alipurduar Court by order of the High Court of Kolkata, according to the public prosecutor.“On November 11, the other defendants in this case applied for bail, but Nisis Pramanik took no such action,” said Majumdar.sources say an arrest warrant was issued against his BJP MP by Cooch Behar because there was no attorney available to represent him in court. Prosecutors then sought the issuance of an arrest warrant.

Last year, Pramanik was embroiled in a civil rights debate. Parliament leader Lipun Bora then wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that Pramanik was Bangladeshi and that his nationality should be investigated. However, the BJP denied this accusation.
