The top 10 films in Indian cinema history have been determined through a vote taken by the FIPRESCI India chapter of the International Federation of Film Critics. The list’s top selection is Pather Panchali by Satyajit Ray.

Ray’s 1955 movie, which served as the first of his Apu Trilogy of movies, was based on Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s 1929 Bengali novel of the same name. The movie was influenced by the Italian Neorealism movement, which was pioneered by directors like Vittorio de Sica, Michelangelo Antonioni, and Roberto Rosselini. Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, and Wes Anderson are among the filmmakers who have praised Pather Panchali as one of the best movies ever made. Aparajito and Apur Sansar came after it.

The rest of the top 10 was dominated by filmmakers synonymous with the parallel film movement in India, which focused on social strife and politics and not mainstream entertainment.

Meghe Dhaka Tara, a 1960 drama directed by Ritwik Ghatak, came in at number two on the list, followed by Bhuvan Shome, a 1969 drama directed by Mrinal Sen. The fourth, fifth, and sixth movies on the list were the 1973 film Garm Hava by MS Sathyu, the 1981 Malayalam film Elippathayam by Adoor Gopalakrishnan, and the 1977 flicks Ghatashraddha and Ghatashraddha by Girish Kasaravalli. The seventh-placed movie was Ray’s Charulata from 1964, which was followed by Shyam Benegal’s Ankur from 1974, Guru Dutt’s Pyaasa from 1954, and Ramesh Sippy’s 1975 Hindi smash Sholay.

The FIPRESCI was established in 1930 and presents prizes at film festivals including the International Film Festival of Kerala, the Cannes Film Festival, the Venice Film Festival, the Vienna International Film Festival, and the Toronto International Film Festival.
A total of 30 FIPRESCI – India members participated in the poll, which was conducted in secret. The top 10 films comprised five Hindi films, three Bengali films, one each from Malayalam and Kannada, while no films in the Tamil language were included.
