Rainbow crosswalks and Pride Flags set to dress up Park Street
“For the first time, the entire route from Park Circus Maidan to the junction of Park Street and Chowringhee will be marked with Pride flags,.said designer Nabonil Das, who is launching this initiative to raise awareness and celebrate diversity in a city that has always been culturally advanced. The first pride walk in India (and possibly South Asia) was the 1999 Kolkata Rainbow Her Pride Walk.
There is even talk of painting the Park Street crosswalk a rainbow. “Everyone has given us a lot of support, from the police to the KMC. We have the official approval of the flag, but we are waiting for the final decision on the crossing,” Nir added. Several restaurants around the city will have tent cards and/or flags that mark them as progressive, inclusive spaces for the LGBTQIA+ community. These include Petercat, Mocambo, Peter Who, The Salthouse, Mrs. Magpie, The Drifters, Porch Kitchen, Marbella and, of course, his one of the first places to introduce the Pink Party in Kolkata, the Starred Hotel, Includes Zalarit Great Eastern. Leading the fight for equality for India’s queer community at the national level.
