Rammohun Library and Free Reading Room Revives the Nostalgic Rammohun Hall at the Heart of The City of Joy
One of the premiere reading institutions in India, Rammohun Library is decked up to welcome the visitors across Kolkata at their much awaited, renovated Rammohun Hall

Kolkata: The inaugural ceremony of this vintage, royal, heritage hub was attended by Prof. Ajay Pratap Singh, Director General of Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation, Dr. Subir Ganguly, President, Rammohun Library and Free Reading Room, Shri Sanjit Mitra, General Secretary of Rammohun Library and Free Reading Room, , Dr. Debashis Bhattacharya, Chairman & Managing Director, Disha Eye Hospitals, Shri Arijit Chatterjee, Advisor-Special Projects, Tide Water Oil Co. (India) Ltd, Dr. Somnath Chatterjee, Director, Suraksha Diagnostics, Dr. Asit Bhowmik, Eye Surgeon and the Shri Malay Sarkar, Sr. Executive Administrator, Berger Paints.
On this auspicious occasion, Shri Sanjit Mitra, General Secretary of Rammohun Library and Free Reading Room said, ” India’s struggle for independence is a significant part of our History. The revolution which brought this liberty and enfranchisement bears its root from the lands of Kolkata. The place, which has given birth to many freedom fighters and nurtured fiery revolutionary movements in its womb. Raja Rammohun Roy is the father to bring this reformation. Rammohun Library was established to commemorate the contribution and sacrifice of this legendary leader and reformist. The Rammohun Hall situated in this library has witnessed many historical happenings related to the great men of India. The initiative of launching this revamped hall is altogether a joint effort to maintain the legacy of our iconic leaders. This place pledges to provide infinite knowledge and build the idea of advancement amongst all. We are extremely glad to reopen the door to the world. We hope the people will have a beneficial time at this place.”

The Rammohun Library and Free Reading Room was established in the year 1904 in the memory of the Father of Bengal Renaissance, Raja Rammohun Roy. Since its inception, this historical place has experienced the presence of the legendary freedom fighters and other honorable personalities of India. From Maharajadhiraj Bahadur Bijoy Chand of Bardhaman to Raja Resheecaser Law, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, Maharaja Manindra Chandra Nandy, Satyendra Nath Tagore, Dwijendralal Roy, Shri Jagadish Chandra Bose, Prafulla Chandra Ray, Brajendranath Shil, Sister Nivedita, Ramananda Chatterjee, Suniti Kumar Chattopadhyay have been a regular visitor of the Rammohun Library.
Since time immemorial, with its treasure of heritage and intellectuality, the Rammohun Library and Free Reading Room have come up with several cultural as well as informative programs in the library’s auditorium which is the Rammohun Hall. Shri Jagadish Chandra Bose’s invaluable lecture on ‘Wounded Plant’, Prafulla Chandra Ray’s political gathering to raise concern regarding the freedom of the politicians who were prisoned for long, and no valid reason are some of the remarkable testimonies of this. The podium of this iconic place has graced more than twenty-two programs which are conceived and performed by Rabindranath Tagore himself. On 1st February 1914, after being conferred with Nobel Prize, R N Tagore has been bestowed with another prestigious accolade titled, ‘Nagarik Samman’ in the Rammohun Hall at the Rammohun Library & Free Reading Room.
