Social media trial : Shoplifting video goes viral, girl commits suicide
According to authorities, a college girl killed herself in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district after a video of her stealing chocolates at a shopping centre went popular on social media.
According to authorities, the body of the third-year undergraduate student was discovered hanging in her house in Subhas Pally, Jaigaon police station area, on Sunday. The body was sent for post-mortem testing, and an inquiry was underway, according to Jaigaon officer-in-charge Prabir Dutta.
The youngster went to a nearby shopping mall with her sister on September 29, and she was apprehended while exiting after allegedly stealing chocolates, according to her father. He stated that she paid the price of the chocolates and apologised to the store officials. However, individuals at the establishment filmed the entire episode and shared it on social media, which quickly went viral, he continued.
According to her father, she took the drastic step out of humiliation.
Locals protested outside the shopping centre after the body was discovered, demanding harsh punishment for those who made the video and shared it online.
The mall’s management could not be reached for comment right away.
