The centre releases amended IT rules for social media.

The Government of India on Friday notified the revised Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules, 2022 months after first proposing changes to the IT Rules, 2021. The amended rules will come into effect immediately.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, a GAC (Grievance Appellate Committee) will hear complaints from users about content moderation decisions of social media platforms.Each of these Appeals Committees will consist of a Chair and two full-time members. Experts see the move as an attempt by the government to take control of social media platforms and big tech companies such as Twitter and Meta.
The Center has listed several guidelines for the necessary conduct by social media intermediaries, one being primarily or exclusively enabling interaction between two or more users and using their services. Distribute, modify or access Modified Rules, Social Media Intermediaries may, on their website or mobile application, publish the Rules and Regulations, Privacy Policy, and the User Agreement in English or any other language specified in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution for the purpose of accessing or using computer resources by publishing each. Communicate in the language of your choice and ensure compliance.
